The Board of Examiners of Barbers was created in 1909 with members appointed by the Governor (L. 1909, p. 98). It was responsible for the examination and licensing of barbers and for the enforcement of sanitary rules for barber shops. The board was abolished by the Civil Administrative Code of 1917 and its powers and duties were transferred to the newly created Department of Registration and Education.

Register entries include apprentice barber's name, address, and age; permit number and date of issue; number of years at trade; employer's name and address; dates of examination and examination notification; and remarks on examination results.
