RECORD GROUP 365.000 - MINING BOARD

The State Board of Commissioners of Labor, also known as the Bureau of Labor Statistics, was created in 1879 to gather and present to the General Assembly statistical data on the laboring classes of the state (L. 1879, p. 61). The Commissioners of Labor also appointed a mining engineer to the State Board of Inspectors who examined applicants for state inspectors of mines, members of the State Board of Examiners for Mine Managers, and the State Board of Examiners for Fire Bosses and Hoisting Engineers which issued certificates of competency to mine managers, hoisting engineers, and fire bosses (L. 1883, p. 119; L. 1891, p. 168; L. 1899, p. 306). The State Mining Board, whose members also were appointed by the Commissioners of Labor, succeeded to these duties in 1899 (L. 1899, p. 306). It too was abolished in 1907 and a new State Mining Board with members appointed by the Governor began to examine and issue licenses for these occupations (L. 1907, p. 387).

The Civil Administrative Code of 1917 abolished both the State Board of Commissioners of Labor and the State Mining Board and transferred the powers and duties of the State Mining Board to a Mining Board within the newly created Department of Mines and Minerals.
