The Centennial Exhibition was held at Philadelphia in 1876 to commemorate the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The Illinois State Board of Managers was created by a Senate joint resolution in 1873 to represent the interests of Illinois at the exhibition (L. 1873, p. 143).
