Entering Search Criteria
The Illinois Public Domain Land Tract Sales database may be searched by
legal description. The following types of geographic searches may be conducted:
- Enter a section number. Valid section numbers are 01 to 36. Section numbers
1 through 9 must be padded with a zero (0).
- Enter a township number and optionally an N for North or S for South. Township
numbers 1 through 9 must be padded with a zero (0).
- Enter a range number and optionally an E for East or W for West. Range
numbers 1 through 9 must be padded with a zero (0).
- Enter the Principal Meridian number as a single digit. Illinois is surveyed
from ranges west of the 2nd Principal Meridian or east and west of the
3rd or 4th Principal Meridians.
- Searches can be conducted with any combination of the four search fields.
Section, township and range numbers 1 through 9 must be padded with a zero
(0).
For example, if you were looking for all of the purchasers of land in Section
36 of Township 25 North, Range 4 East of the Third Principal Meridian,
you would enter the following numbers in the appropriate fields: 36 in
the "Section No." field, 25N in the "Township" field,
04E in the "Range" field, and 3 in the "Meridian" field. The records returned will show that there were six purchases from the
General Land Office within this township.
