IRAD Internships
Purpose
The Illinois State Archives offers 18 internships in the Illinois
Regional Archives Depositories (IRAD) System. IRAD depositories are
located at Eastern Illinois University, Illinois State University,
Northeastern Illinois University, Northern Illinois University,
Southern Illinois University–Carbondale, University of
Illinois–Springfield, and Western Illinois University. These
depositories preserve official records of local governmental
agencies which have permanent legal, administrative, historical, or
other research values. These records are maintained as a resource
for governmental authorities, scholars, and the general public.
Internship
Requirements
Interns are required to be enrolled in a graduate program in
history, political science or closely related field, and accepted
into a graduate program at one of the seven depository universities.
The Illinois State Archives provides a monthly stipend of $700 to
each intern during the period August to May. The Illinois State
Archives also provides up to $2,500 for each intern's tuition and
fees for the academic year.
Intern
Duties
The IRAD internship introduces graduate student interns to the
functions of an archives and allows them to develop basic archival
and research skills. Intern duties include arranging and processing
records, preparing descriptive inventories, and handling reference
on county, township and municipal records.
