Illinois Regional Archives Depositories

IRAD Internships

Purpose
The Illinois State Archives offers 18 internships in the Illinois Regional Archives Depositories (IRAD) System. IRAD depositories are located at Eastern Illinois University, Illinois State University, Northeastern Illinois University, Northern Illinois University, Southern Illinois University–Carbondale, University of Illinois–Springfield, and Western Illinois University. These depositories preserve official records of local governmental agencies which have permanent legal, administrative, historical, or other research values. These records are maintained as a resource for governmental authorities, scholars, and the general public.

Internship Requirements
Interns are required to be enrolled in a graduate program in history, political science or closely related field, and accepted into a graduate program at one of the seven depository universities. The Illinois State Archives provides a monthly stipend of $700 to each intern during the period August to May. The Illinois State Archives also provides up to $2,500 for each intern's tuition and fees for the academic year.

Intern Duties
The IRAD internship introduces graduate student interns to the functions of an archives and allows them to develop basic archival and research skills. Intern duties include arranging and processing records, preparing descriptive inventories, and handling reference on county, township and municipal records.
