Counties Included in the Illinois Statewide Marriage Index

The Illinois Statewide Marriage Index is an ongoing project and data entry is far from complete. The list below should be consulted to determine the status of data entry for a particular county. Data entry is complete for 88 of the 98 counties entered into the database. Counties which have been completed are capitalized. There are still 4 counties for which no marriages have been entered.

Please note that the Illinois Regional Archives Depository system does not hold marriage records for all of the counties and date spans shown in the list. Consult the IRAD Local Governmental Records Database to determine whether marriages for a particular county are available from an Illinois Regional Archives Depository. Marriage records not held by IRAD will be available from the county clerks of the various counties. Original marriage licenses for Cook County were destroyed by the Great Fire of Chicago on October 8–10, 1871. Marriages in the Illinois Statewide Marriage Index for Cook County prior to the fire were found in the Sam Fink Index. A copy of the Sam Fink Index is available on microfilm at the Illinois Regional Archives Depository (IRAD) at Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago. The only additional information that this depository can provide is the name of the newspaper in which the marriage appeared.

** Marriage records in Iroquois County before October 1866 were destroyed by a courthouse fire. Marriages before October 1866 were entered from the Iroquois Journal and St. John the Baptist Catholic Church records.
