24-Month Instruction Permit
Applicants under the age of 18 years will be issued instruction permits for a 24-month time period. Applicants must have parental consent to obtain an instruction permit. Applicants have to pay the appropriate fee, pass a vision screening and pass the applicable written test(s). Proper identification documents will be required. The behind-the-wheel test is taken when applying for the full driver's license, either at the Secretary of State facility or high school participating in the CDTP program.
Applicants must follow these requirements when driving:
- Drive while supervised by a parent or legal guardian who is 21 years old or older, has an equal or greater license classification as the driver, and has held a valid license for at least one year.
- Drive with an instruction permit for a minimum of 3 months before applying for full licensure
- Enroll in or be participating in an approved driver's education course
- Limit passengers to one in the front seat and to the number of seat belts in the rear seat of the vehicle.
- All persons under 18 belted.
12-Month Instruction Permit
Applicants 18 years of age and older will be issued instruction permits for a 12-month period. Applicants have to pay the appropriate fee, pass a vision screening and pass the applicable written test(s). Proper identification documents will be required.
Applicants must follow these requirements when driving:
- Drive while supervised by an adult who has an equal or greater license classification as the permit driver and has held a valid license for at least one year.
Permit Expired
My instruction permit has expired. What do I do?
Applicants have to pay the appropriate fee, pass vision screening and pass the applicable written test(s). Proper identification documents will be required.
