Driver's License

Restricted Local License

A Restricted Local License may be issued to qualified drivers who reside in population areas of 3,500 people or less and who desire to drive only within certain areas of this population, such as to the grocery store, bank or post office.

To obtain a Restricted Local License, the applicant must:

  1. visit a Driver Services Facility;
  2. surrender their current license;
  3. pass a vision test;
  4. pass a written examination (if required);
  5. pay the appropriate fee; and
  6. provide the route(s) they wish to travel.

Facility personnel will then complete a route form and forward it along with the application to the Springfield Driver Services Department's Special License Unit for approval.

Upon approval of the application and route form, a facility representative will contact the applicant to make arrangements for the drive test, which will be administered over the route(s) they wish to travel.

Upon successful completion of the drive test, the test results will be forwarded to the Special License Unit. The applicant will receive his or her Restricted Local License via the mail.
