I just moved to Illinois. How do I get a driver's license and Illinois license plates?

As a new Illinois resident, you may continue to drive on your valid out-of-state driver's license for 90 days. CDL holders must obtain an Illinois CDL within 30 days of becoming an Illinois resident.

To obtain a new driver's license, you must visit a Driver Services facility to surrender your out-of-state license and pass a vision screening, written exam and possibly a drive exam. Proper identification must be presented so we can verify your full name, date of birth, social security number, Illinois residency and written signature. Find the Documents you'll need to apply.

You must change your vehicle registration and order new license plates within 30 days by filling out a form at a Driver Services facility.

I'm a first time driver. How do I get a driver's license?

You must be at least 16 years of age and have successfully completed an approved driver education course or be at least 18 years of age. Proper identification must be presented at the Driver Services Facility so we can verify your full name, date of birth, social security number, Illinois residency and written signature. I'm visiting from another country. Can I drive?

You may drive in Illinois with your valid license from your own country during your stay. This also applies to your spouse and children, living with you while attending an Illinois college or university. You may want to read Illinois' Rules of the Road.

I hold an International License. Is this valid in Illinois?

No. This license is not recognized as a valid drivers license in Illinois.

What documents do I need to apply for an identification card in Illinois?

How often will I have to be tested to keep my driver's license?

A driver is required to take a written test at least once every eight years if traffic convictions have occurred. Everyone must have his or her vision screened when applying for a renewal, with the exception of Safe Driver Renewals. All persons age 75 or older must take a driving test at each renewal. Drivers age 81-86 must have their licenses renewed every two years, while persons age 87 and older must renew annually. The Driver's License section on our web site has comprehensive information.

What are the driving laws like in Illinois?

Do I need insurance for my vehicle in Illinois?

Yes. Illinois has a mandatory insurance law.

What is Illinois' seat belt law?

All front seat occupants are required to be protected by a safety belt or safety restraint system, regardless of age.

Passengers under age 16 regardless of location in the vehicle must be protected by a safety belt or restraint system. Refer to the Child Passenger Protection Act.

Drivers under age 18 are currently required to limit passengers to one in the front seat and the number of seat belts in the back seat. However, effective January 1, 2004, during the first six months of their license (or until they reach the age of 18, whichever occurs sooner) they are limited to only one passenger under the age of 20 (except immediate family which includes siblings or children of the driver). All passengers under age 18, with a driver under age 18, regardless of location in the vehicle must be belted. Refer to the Graduated Licensing System.
