Safe Driver FAQs Driver Services
Who is eligible for Safe Driver Renewal?
In order to be eligible for the program you must meet all of the Eligibility Requirements
How will I know if I meet the eligibility requirements?
We mail eligible drivers a "Safe Driver Renewal Application" approximately 60 days prior to the expiration of their current Driver's License.
How do I renew my Driver's License online?
It's as easy as Four Simple Steps:
- Type in your renewal authorization number which is located at the top of your renewal notice.
- Follow directions on screen and verify your information.
- Use a personal checking account or Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express Card for payment.
- Print out your confirmation. Your renewed license should arrive at your mailing address within 15 business days.
Your renewed driver's license will be delivered to your address on file with the Office within 15 business days. If your license is returned by the postal service for any reason, you will be required to appear at a Secretary of State facility and present two forms of acceptable documents to verify your residence address.
I have recently moved, can I still renew my license through the program?
You cannot renew by touch-tone but you can renew by mail or online. If renewing by mail, be sure to fill in your change of address information. If you are renewing by online, please update your address online prior to visiting the Safe Driver renewal website. Our office will update your driving record and mail the license to your new address.
If you choose to complete your address change online, you will be required to provide two acceptable forms of identification to verify your new address at your next Secretary of State facility visit.
My Driver's License will expire tomorrow, can I still renew online?
This close to your expiration, we suggest visiting a Driver's License Facility to ensure you leave with a valid temporary driver's license while your renewal is being processed. The temporary, secure paper driver's license is valid for 90 days and will serve as your DL for driving purposes and proof of identification. The temporary, secure paper driver's license will contain a photo and the basic information that appears on the permanent driver's license. In addition, the facility employee will return the old DL card back to the applicant.
While you are not restricted from using Safe Driver Renewal:
- The Secretary of State's office does not accept responsibility for your receipt of a renewed license later than your expiration if you use online renewal too close to your expiration date.
- We suggest you renew as soon after receiving the renewal notice as possible.
Can I apply to register to vote at the time of renewal?
Yes, under the National Voter Registration Act, the Secretary of State's Office will mail you a Motor Voter Packet for you to complete and forward to your local Election Official. Simply answer "yes" to the Motor Voter Question and a packet will be mailed to you.
I would like to become an organ donor, what do I need to do?
During the renewal process, you will be asked if you would like to participate in the organ donor program. If you answer yes, you will be instructed to fill out the back of your license and to notify your family members of your decision. Our office will add your name to the organ donor registry.
Why do I have to pay a payment processor fee?
The service providers for credit card and electronic check charge a fee per transaction. The Secretary of State's Office is currently unable, by law, to absorb that fee.
Who should I contact if something happens to my order before I print out the confirmation page?
E-mail us using the Safe Driver Contact form and include your Driver's License number. We will check if your transaction was completed successfully.
How can I be assured the information I provide is safe and will not be shared or sold?
