2001 Total Crash Fatality Facts

2001 Illinois Data:

  • 1,414 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes.

  • 214 young people aged 16-20 were killed in motor vehicle crashes.

  • There were 186 pedestrian fatalities, 27 of which were bicyclists.

2001 National Data:

  • 42,116 lives were lost and more than 3 million people were injured in police-reported crashes.

  • 7,547 young people, aged 16-20 were killed in motor vehicle crashes and 547,000 young people were injured in motor vehicle crashes.

  • 4,882 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes and 78,000 pedestrians were injured. This is the equivalent of:

    • one fatality every 108 minutes
    • one injury every 7 minutes

  • Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for every age from 4-33 years old.
