Bicycle Statistics



This information is compiled and maintained by the Illinois Department of Transportation or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It is available on our web site as a service to you.

Illinois in 2005:

  • There were 22 bicyclists killed in traffic fatalities.

Nationally in 2005:

  • There were 784 bicyclists killed and 45,000 were injured.
  • Individuals under age 16 accounted for 18% of all pedalcyclists killed and 35% of those injured in traffic crashes.
  • 17% of the pedalcyclists killed in traffic crashes were between 5 and 15 years old.
  • Alcohol was involved in more than one-third of the pedalcyclist fatalities.
  • 69% of pedalcycle deaths occurred in urban areas, and 70% occurred at non-intersection locations.
  • Pedalcyclist fatalities are more likely to occur in the months of June, July and August between the hours of 5:00pm and 9:00pm.

Illinois in 2004:

  • There were 25 bicyclists killed in traffic fatalities.

Nationally in 2004:

  • There were 725 bicyclists killed and 41,000 were injured.
  • Individuals under age 16 accounted for 21% of all bicyclists killed and 32% of those injured in traffic crashes.
  • 19% of the bicyclists killed in traffic crashes were between 5 and 15 years old.
  • Alcohol was involved in more than one-third of the bicyclist fatalities.
  • 66% of bicycle deaths occurred in urban areas, and 67% occurred at non-intersection locations.
  • Bicycle fatalities are more likely to occur in the months of June, July and August between the hours of 5:00pm and 9:00pm.

  • There were 622 bicyclists killed and 46,000 were injured.
  • Individuals under age 16 accounted for 23% of all bicyclists killed and 37% of those injured in traffic crashes.
  • More than 23% of the bicyclists killed in traffic crashes were between 5 and 15 years old.
  • Alcohol was involved in more than one-third of the bicyclist fatalities.
  • 69% of bicycle deaths occurred in urban areas, and 71% occurred at non-intersection locations.
  • Bicycle fatalities are more likely to occur in the months of June, July and August between the hours of 5:00pm and 9:00pm.

  • Alcohol was involved in more than one-third of the bicyclist fatalities.
  • 68% of bicycle deaths occurred in urban areas, and 68% occurred at non-intersection locations.
  • Bicycle deaths are most likely to occur in the months of July, August, and September between the hours of 5:00pm and 9:00pm.

Nationally in 2000:

  • There were 690 bicyclists killed and 51,000 injured in traffic crashes.
  • Bicyclists under age 16 accounted for 28% of all bicyclists killed and 40% of those injured in traffic crashes in 2000.
  • 27% of the bicyclists killed in traffic crashes in 2000 were between 5 and 15 years old.
  • Alcohol was involved in more than one-third of the bicyclist fatalities in 2000.
  • 63% of bicycle deaths occurred in urban areas, and 66% occurred at non-intersection locations
  • Bicycle deaths are most likely to occur in the months of July, August, and September between the hours of 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
