Pedestrian Statistics



This information is compiled and maintained by the Illinois Department of Transportation or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It is available on our web site as a service to you.

Illinois in 2005:

  • There were 164 pedestrian fatalities in Illinois.

Nationally in 2005

  • 4,881 pedestrians were killed and 64,000 injured in traffic crashes.
  • An average of one pedestrian is killed in a traffic crash every 108 minutes and one is injured every 8 minutes.
  • Alcohol was involved (either for the driver or the pedestrian) in 44% of the traffic crashes that resulted in pedestrian fatalities. Of the pedestrians involved, 32% were intoxicated with a BAC of .08 or greater.
  • Children age 15 and younger accounted for 8 percent of the pedestrian fatalities and older persons (age 70+) accounted for 16 percent of all pedestrian fatalities.
  • Nearly one half (48%) of all pedestrian fatalities occurred on Friday (16.6%), Saturday (18.3%) and Sunday (13.5%).
  • Forty-three percent of the 388 young (under age 16) pedestrian fatalities occurred in crashes between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

  • There were 156 pedestrian fatalities in Illinois.

  • 4,641 pedestrians were killed and 68,000 injured in traffic crashes.
  • An average of one pedestrian is killed in a traffic crash every 113 minutes and one is injured every 8 minutes.
  • Alcohol was involved (either for the driver or the pedestrian) in 47% of the traffic crashes that resulted in pedestrian fatalities. Of the pedestrians involved, 34% were intoxicated with a BAC of .08 or greater.
  • Children age 15 and younger accounted for 8 percent of the pedestrian fatalities and older persons (age 70+) accounted for 15 percent of all pedestrian fatalities.
  • Nearly one half (49%) of all pedestrian fatalities occurred on Friday (16.7%), Saturday (17.5%) and Sunday (14.7%).
  • Forty percent of the 393 young (under age 16) pedestrian fatalities occurred in crashes between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

  • An average of one pedestrian is killed in a traffic crash every 111 minutes and one is injured every 8 minutes.
  • Alcohol was involved (either for the driver or the pedestrian) in 46% of the traffic crashes that resulted in pedestrian fatalities. Of the pedestrians involved, 34% were intoxicated with a BAC of .08 or greater.
  • Pedestrian fatalities accounted for 86% of non-occupant fatalities, 11% were bicyclists and 3% were skateboard riders, roller skaters, etc.
  • 44% of the pedestrian fatalities under 16 years of age were killed between 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m..
  • Nearly one half (48%) of all pedestrian fatalities occurred on Friday (16%), Saturday (18%) and Sunday (13%).
  • Older pedestrians (age 70+) account for 16% of all pedestrian fatalities.

  • Pedestrian fatalities accounted for 85% of non-occupant fatalities, 13% were bicyclists and 2% were skateboard riders, roller skaters, and others.
  • 45% of the pedestrian fatalities under 16 years of age were killed between 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
  • Nearly one half (48%) of all pedestrian fatalities occurred on Friday (17%), Saturday (18%) and Sunday (13%).
  • Older pedestrians (age 70+) account for 18% of all pedestrian fatalities.

  • In 2000, there were 187 pedestrian fatalities in Illinois; 18 of these were bicyclists.

  • 4,739 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes (a decrease of 27% from 1990) and 78,000 pedestrians were injured.
  • An average of one pedestrian is killed in a traffic crash every 111 minutes and one in injured every 7 minutes.
  • 23% of all children between the ages of 5 and 9 years who were killed in traffic crashes were pedestrians.
  • Pedestrian fatalities accounted for 85% of nonoccupant fatalities, 12% were bicyclists and 3% were skateboard riders, roller skaters, etc.
  • 42% of the pedestrian fatalities under 16 years of age were killed between 4:00pm and 8:00pm.
  • Nearly one half (48%) of all pedestrian fatalities occurred on Friday (16%), Saturday (18%) and Sunday (14%).
  • Alcohol was involved in 47% of the traffic crashes that resulted in pedestrian fatalities. Of the pedestrians involved, 31% were intoxicated with a BAC of .10 or greater.
