2007 ALCOHOL-RELATED CRASH FACTS



  • In Illinois, there were 507 people killed in alcohol-involved crashes in 2007, which is 41.0 percent of the 1,249 total motor vehicle crash fatalities.
  • Nationally, 15,387 lives were lost in alcohol-involved crashes.
  • 37% of the fatal traffic crashes in the United States were alcohol-related in 2007.
  • The greatest single cause of death for people between the ages of 2 and 34 is traffic crashes.
  • All 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico have .08 BAC per se laws.
  • Over 1 million drivers are arrested annually for driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics.
  • In fatal crashes in 2007, 35% of drivers with BAC levels of .08 or higher were drivers between the ages of 21-24.
  • The most frequently recorded BAC level among drinking drivers involved in fatal crashes is .16.
