2007 TOTAL CRASH FATALITY FACTS



Illinois Data:

  • 1,356 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes. (NHTSA Alcohol Fact Sheet, page 7)
  • There were 156 pedestrian fatalities (NHTSA Pedestrian Fact Sheet, page 6) and 25 bicyclist fatalities (NHTSA Pedalcyclists Fact Sheet, page 4)

National Data:

  • 42,636 lives were lost and more than 2.7 million people were injured in police-reported crashes. (NHTSA Overview Fact Sheet, page 1)
  • 5,896 young people, aged 16-20, were killed in motor vehicle crashes. (NHTSA Alcohol Fact Sheet, page 2)
  • 4,641 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes and 68,000 pedestrians were injured. This is the equivalent of:
  • one fatality every 113 minutes
  • one injury every 8 minutes (NHSTA, Overview, page 1)
  • Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for every age from 3-33 years old. (NHTSA Overview Fact Sheet, page 2)
