2003 TOTAL CRASH FATALITY FACTS



Illinois Data:

  • 1,453 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes.
  • 223 young people aged 16-20 were killed in motor vehicle crashes.
  • There were 188 pedestrian fatalities and 17 bicyclist fatalities.

National Data:

  • 42,643 lives were lost and more than 2.8 million people were injured in police-reported crashes.
  • 6,002 young people, aged 16-20, were killed in motor vehicle crashes.
  • 4,749 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes and 70,000 pedestrians were injured. This is the equivalent of:

    • one fatality every 111 minutes
    • one injury every 8 minutes
  • Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for every age from 2-33 years old.
