How can I get a copy of an Illinois law (Public Act) and/or legislative debate on an issue?

The Index Department can provide copies of Public Acts and legislative debate. If you don't know the Public Act number, contact the Legislative Information System, 217/782-3944.

The Administrative Code Division will research your request, provide you with the information or refer you to the appropriate state agency.

Who needs to register as a lobbyist?

The Secretary of State can provide copies of the Lobbyist Registration Act to assist you or your attorney in making a decision.

Who handles allegations of misconduct by notaries public?

The Secretary of State administers the Notary Public Act, but complaints of misconduct must be filed with a law enforcement agency, the Attorney General or a State's Attorney's office.

Who has to file a Statement of Economic Interest?

The Governmental Ethics Act requires elected officials and certain state employees with supervisory duties or authority over state contracts/funds to file annual statements. The Department of Index sends out reminder notices to employees identified by other state agencies.
