Illinois Center for the Book

About the Illinois Center for the Book

The Center for the Book in the Library of Congress was established by public law to promote books, reading, literacy and libraries, as well as the scholarly study of books. To expand the Center's reach, a network of 50 state center affiliates were established, with each affiliate sponsoring programs that highlight the area's literary heritage.

The Illinois Center for the Book, established in 1985 at the Illinois State Library, was an early affiliate, and the third center of its kind. The Illinois Center has since grown and evolved to become an official program of the Illinois Secretary of State and State Library.

The Center, whose activities are guided by an Advisory Committee, administers statewide reading and writing programs and other related literary projects, in accordance with the following mission: Nurturing and connecting readers and writers, and honoring our rich literary heritage.
