Delivery Service History and Background Illinois State Library

History and Background

The transportation and delivery of library materials has been a feature of library service and development since the founding of the regional library systems in the 1960’s. Until automated library systems became widely available and shared systems were developed, delivery was done primarily within a regional system’s boundaries.

By the 1980’s, statewide resource sharing became both feasible and highly desirable. There have been, at least, seven major consultant’s reports, task forces and white papers on the creation, refinement and reconfiguration of statewide delivery service in Illinois. This 35 year process culminated in the 2014 recommendations of the Illinois State Library’s Delivery Advisory Committee.
