The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) has designated 84 libraries located in 48 states, D.C., and Puerto Rico, to serve as Patent and Trademark Depository Libraries (PTDLs). Illinois is fortunate to have two depositories. The Illinois State Library was designated a depository library in 1984 and the Chicago Public Library was one of the original 22 libraries designated in 1876. Both of the collections are open to the public, include backfiles of all U.S. patents since 1790, and exceed the core requirements for intellectual property collections, reference services and training in patent and trademark searching.
PTDLs receive and house copies of U.S. patents and trademark materials and resources, including CD and DVD products, standard patent search tools. CASSIS and the WEST (Web-based Examiner Search Tool) USPTO internal patent searching systems.
