On the south end of the State Library's first floor is the Illinois Authors Reading Room. Display cases in this room house an extensive collection of works by Illinois authors, many of which are first editions or signed copies. A portion of the proceeds from the annual Illinois Authors Book Fair held at the State Library are used to expand the Library's collection of first edition and signed works.
ILLINOIS AUTHORS COLLECTION
To cultivate interest in the literature of our state, the State Library has undertaken the development of a collection of works by Illinois authors. This is the only collection in the Illinois State Library where fiction, poetry, drama, and imaginative works are systematically acquired.
The goal of the Illinois Authors Collection is to build and maintain a representative collection of works by individuals who were born or lived in Illinois. Special consideration is given to works that are set in Illinois or where the state plays an
important intellectual or structural role in the work. The Illinois Authors Collection is intended to demonstrate the breadth of Illinois letter and scholarship throughout its history and to highlight the works of new and emerging authors. The books in the Authors Collection, with a few exceptions, circulate and are frequently used in displays and programs. They are classed according to the Dewey system and are accessed through ILLINET Online.
