- Go to the library often. Let children get their own cards.
- Have lots of things to read around the house; books, magazines, newspapers, even TV Guides.
- Let children choose what they want to read. You will find out what they like.
- Read to your children, no matter how old or how young they may be. They will see that you think reading is important for children.
- Let your children see you reading. They will see that you think reading is important for adults.

- Make a special place in your home for books and for reading. Let children show their favorite book.
- Make a special time in your life for reading. Before bed or after dinner or while waiting in doctor's offices, any time is good.
- Talk to your children about the books you are reading with them. What do they like? Why? What don't they like? Why?
- Let children write a book. The youngest ones can say the words while you write it. Older children can write and draw pictures for it.
- Let children act out a favorite part of a book.
- Let children draw a part of a book or make up questions about what happened.
