HOW TO HELP YOUR CHILD BE A BETTER READER

  • Go to the library often. Let children get their own cards.
  • Have lots of things to read around the house; books, magazines, newspapers, even TV Guides.
  • Let children choose what they want to read. You will find out what they like.
  • Read to your children, no matter how old or how young they may be. They will see that you think reading is important for children.
  • Let your children see you reading. They will see that you think reading is important for adults.
  • Let your children read to you.
  • Make a special place in your home for books and for reading. Let children show their favorite book.
  • Make a special time in your life for reading. Before bed or after dinner or while waiting in doctor's offices, any time is good.
  • Talk to your children about the books you are reading with them. What do they like? Why? What don't they like? Why?
  • Let children write a book. The youngest ones can say the words while you write it. Older children can write and draw pictures for it.
  • Let children act out a favorite part of a book.
  • Let children draw a part of a book or make up questions about what happened.
