How many people in Illinois cannot read?
The State Adult Literacy Survey indicates that 44-48 percent of Illinois' citizens do not have the skills needed to function effectively in society. A summary of the survey can be obtained from Cherryl Walker in our office.

How do I become a volunteer?
The Illinois Adult Learning Hotline links volunteers and potential students with programs that will best suit them. Call 1-800-321-9511 or email Laura Bercovitz .

How do I obtain a grant application?
Applications are available in January each year for applicants within Illinois. Contact Cherryl Walker at our office to be placed on our mailing list any time of the year.

How do I become a GED Business and Labor Partner?
A business must agree to do the following: share information about available local GED classes and encourage workers to obtain the GED; provide paid release time, if necessary, for workers to take the GED test; reimburse the GED test fee for workers who pass the GED test. What software is available for use in family programs?
A variety of educational, interactive cd-roms were distributed to libraries and literacy programs throughout the state. Contact Cyndy Colletti, the Family Literacy Consultant, to find out where to access this software.

How can I find a partner to apply for a workplace grant?
Our office has developed a Workplace Education Resource Directory, which lists providers prepared to work with businesses to design and deliver workplace literacy programs. For a copy of the directory, please contact Beth Paoli, the Workplace Literacy Consultant.

What is Family Reading Night?
Family Reading Night, which is held the third Thursday of November, is a statewide initiative to encourage families to spend an evening reading together. For more information or to request materials please contact Karen Muskopf at the Illinois State Library or call 217-782-7749.

How can I start a family literacy partnership?
Secretary of State literacy grants require that three partners--an agency that provides adult education, an organization that serves children at risk of academic failure and a public library, cooperate to provide services to the family as a whole. A packet of information on building and strengthening that partnership can be obtained by contacting Cyndy Colletti, the Family Literacy Consultant.

How can I or my company support literacy programs?
Local literacy programs need both financial and in-kind support from individuals and corporations. Programs may have different needs. Contact Cherryl Walker at our office to find the program(s) in your community.

Where are the grant programs located in my area?
Every fiscal year our office produces a booklet that lists the programs that we fund by region of the state. To obtain a copy please contact our office. You can also get this information from Laura Bercovitz the Illinois Adult Learning Hotline at 1-800-321-9511.
