TESTING

Preference for employment is granted to residents of the State of Illinois. Such preference is extended when the qualifications of residents and non-residents applying for the State positions are substantially equal.

Based on the operating needs of the Office of the Secretary of State, job opportunities for individual titles may vary considerably. Where openings are limited, a high examination rating cannot guarantee that an applicant will receive an invitation to interview or an offer of employment.

The Office of the Secretary of State utilizes its own application form. One completed application is required when taking written or typing examinations at the Springfield or Chicago test centers. A separate application for each title is required for training and experience examinations.

Employment applications must be completed in full. Additional sheets in the same format as the Office of the Secretary of State Employment Application may be attached if additional space is needed. Up to three counties or Cook County zones of preference may be indicated on the application. County/zone preference determines how names will be arranged on the eligible list.

Written tests are given daily Monday through Thursday at 9:00 a.m., in the Chicago (17 North State, Suite 1276, Chicago, IL) and Springfield (113 Howlett Building, Springfield, IL) test centers.

Written tests requiring typing are given Tuesday and Thursday at 1:00 p.m. in both Chicago and Springfield test centers.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Applicants must be prompt for testing. Admittance for late arrivals will not be guaranteed. Valid photo identification IS required for admission to the examination.

Applicants must have a COMPLETED APPLICATION AND PHOTO ID to take employment tests.

For grading based upon training and experience listed on the application, it is not necessary to appear at a test center. These applications are accepted daily in the Chicago and Springfield offices.

Passing examination grades are valid for a period of one year from the date of the examination, whether written or based on training and experience. Upon expiration of the one-year period, the applicant's name will automatically be removed from the eligible list. To reestablish eligibility, the applicant must participate again in the examination process.

Accommodation Testing: Individuals covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act or those requiring special assistance with the testing process should request a Reasonable Accommodation Form from the Department of Personnel by contacting either the Chicago or Springfield personnel offices. The Reasonable Accommodation Form must be completed in full and submitted to the Department of Personnel for review. The applicant will be notified of the time and place to take the examination if any accommodation is granted.

Any questions regarding testing should be directed to the following Department of Personnel office:
