Under Illinois law, veterans who meet eligibility requirements are entitled to additional points on examinations and veterans' preference. A veteran or member of the Illinois National Guard or any reserve component of the armed forces of the United States, must establish veterans' preference by submitting certified copies of a DD214/215, NGB22 (or equivalent form) or proof of a service-connected disability from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. Once the veteran has established status as a veteran with the Department of Personnel, subsequent Employment Applications need not include copies of such proof of service. In addition, if the veteran engages in additional service which would alter the preference points on the examination after establishing veterans' status with the Department of Personnel, the veteran must submit a certified copy of the proof of service and mark the Employment Application accordingly.
