An astounding number of today's investors approach banks and brokerage offices without the knowledge required to adequately evaluate their investment options and without the knowledge required to assess the risks involved. Investors who are ill-informed face the greatest risk of falling victim to an investment scam or con artist. A well informed investor is usually a well protected investor. Clearly investor education can be an effective deterrent against investment scams and can help protect investors (and taxpayers) from the high cost of securities fraud.
The Illinois Securities Department has made investor education a top priority. It is the goal of the Department to inform and educate all Illinois investors. Accordingly, the Department has a number of resources available on investing basics, including brochures, publications, video tapes and on-line computer services. The Department staff is also available for speaking to civic organizations.
