Military — Disabled Veteran

Any U.S. Armed Forces veteran who has a military-service disability and a licensed physician has certified that because of the service-connected disability, the veteran qualifies for issuance of a disabled license plate (625 ILCS 5/3-616). Vehicles displaying these plates may park in spaces reserved for persons with disabilities.

Fees

Random-Number Disabled Veteran License Plates
  • Newly acquired vehicle/first-time issuance
    $95 - 1st set of plates ($95 title fee + No registration fee)
    $196 - 2nd set of plates ($95 title fee + $101 registration fee)
  • Currently titled vehicle/first-time issuance
    No Fee - 1st set of plates
    $101 - 2nd set of plates ($101 registration fee)
  • Current plates expire within 90 days
    $29 - 1st set of plates ($29 replacement fee)
    $130 - 2nd set of plates ($101 registration fee + $29 replacement fee)
  • Current plates do not expire within 90 days
    $29 - 1st set of plates ($29 replacement fee)
    $29 - 2nd set of plates ($29 replacement fee)
  • Annual renewal
    No Fee - 1st set of plates
    $101 - 2nd set of plates ($101 registration fee)

Switching from current random-number Disabled Veteran plates to vanity and/or personalized Disabled Veteran plates requires a $29 replacement fee. Registration fee may vary based on current registration.


Vanity Disabled Veteran License Plates

To Apply

  • One must provide a letter from the Department of Veterans' Affairs verifying that you are military service disabled—entire rating/decision letter and a certificate for disabled parking-Military Service connected.
  • The request can only be processed in Springfield. Apply in person or mail the proper documentation to:

Availability

  • Disabled Veteran license plates are multi-year and may be displayed on passenger vehicles, trucks and vans weighing 8,000 pounds or less and sport utility vehicles.
  • Eligible for Benefit Access Program

Renewal Methods

  • The no fee Disabled Veteran license plates must be renewed in Springfield. Apply in person or mail the proper documentation to:

  • Only the second set of Disabled Veteran license plates can be renewed online, by mail, touch-tone phone, or visit a Driver Services facility.
