Purple Heart

Any U.S. citizen who resides in Illinois and has been awarded the Purple Heart by a branch of the Armed Forces may apply for these plates.

The Purple Heart recipient may apply for as many sets of these plates as he or she has vehicles titled, registered or leased in his or her name.

The surviving spouse of a person awarded a Purple Heart may obtain and/or retain these plates.

STANDARD
Currently Registered Vehicle

  • First-time issuance - $78
    ($78 Registration fee)
  • Current plates expire within 90 days - $107
    ($78 registration fee + $29 replacement fee)
  • Current plates do not expire within 90 days - $29
    ($29 replacement fee)
  • Annual renewal - $78
    ($78 registration fee)

Newly Acquired Vehicle

  • First-time issuance - $143
    ($143 title/registration fee)

To Apply

  • one must provide a copy of the Discharge from Military Service (DD214), or a letter of verification showing your status as a Purple Heart recipient from the Department of Veterans Affairs or the federal government.

  • The request can only be processed in Springfield. Apply in person or mail the proper documentation to:

Availability

  • Purple Heart License Plates are multi-year and may be displayed on passenger vehicles, trucks and vans weighing 8,000 pounds or less and Sport Utility Vehicles.
  • The surviving spouse of a person awarded a Purple Heart may obtain and/or retain these plates.
