Support this unique 2,000-acre zoological park which is home to animals that called it home during pioneer days by purchasing Peoria Wildlife Prairie Park License Plates. Wolves, bison, waterfowl, black bear, elk, cougar, otter and many other creatures roam natural settings, including a butterfly garden, wildflowers, lakes, and restored prairie.
Wildlife Prairie Park has been developed by and is currently operated by the Forest Park Foundation. The Foundation was founded in 1939 and held as its goals the provision of health care for the elderly and handicapped and the procurement and development of open land for conservation, education and recreation purposes. The Foundation has been deeply involved in many philanthropic projects. The Forest Park Foundation has also acquired thousands of acres of land for park districts and has been instrumental in guiding the development of that land along the lines of conservation, education and recreation.
Wildlife Prairie Park began in the late 1960's to create a park where the animals could live fairly freely. Among others, Marlin Perkins agreed with the idea that it be only for native Illinois animals. Very few parks have been built around similar themes. As often as possible, recycled materials are used to reduce costs and to save resources as much as possible. Many of the bridges and habitats were built totally by hand to protect the natural foliage.
