License Plate Guide

Farm Truck and Trailer

Farm registration may be used for straight trucks, truck tractors and trailers used in various farming operations. Farm plates are issued on a fiscal year basis (July 1 - June 30).

To qualify for farm registration, a vehicle must be used exclusively for the owner's own agricultural, horticultural or livestock raising operation. Such vehicles, however, are not-for-hire.

Farm registration also applies to trucks, tractors, and trailers used only in transportation for-hire of seasonal, fresh and perishable fruit or vegetables from the farm to the first point of processing.

Farm vehicles can be registered to an owner who is allowed five farm truck plates and only two of those five vehicles shall exceed 59,500 gross weight in lbs per vehicle.

A trailer is defined as "Every vehicle without motive power in operation, other than a pole trailer, designed for carrying persons or property and for being drawn by a motor vehicle and so constructed that no part of its weight rests upon the towing vehicle" (625 ILCS 5/1-209). One plate is issued to each trailer. An owner may only apply for and receive two farm trailer registrations. (625 ILCS 5/3-819)
