White Awards Grants Allowing Libraries
to Purchase New Books

SPRINGFIELD –– Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White today awarded almost $1.4 million to more than 500 Illinois libraries for the purchase of books in the areas of science, health, multiculturalism and foreign language.

     The Fiscal Year 2001 Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) Collection Connection grants allow individual libraries to purchase up to $2,500 worth of non-fiction or reference materials in one or more of the four areas of concentration. Each year the Illinois State Library awards approximately $5 million in federal LSTA funds to all types of Illinois libraries.

     "One of my goals as State Librarian is to assist all of our Illinois libraries in obtaining the materials they need to best serve their patrons," White said. "LSTA grants are some of the most important grants distributed by the Illinois State Library. They allow libraries to purchase badly needed materials that they might not be able to purchase on their own.

     "The Collection Connection grant program allows libraries to enhance their collections in four very important areas for which there is increasing demand among patrons: science, health, multiculturalism and foreign language. Citizens are seeking the most up to date information available in these ever-changing fields. Young people who may be seeking career guidance in these areas need to know that they are accessing the most recent information. These grants will ensure that our libraries can purchase books and other materials that will keep Illinois citizens well informed and well educated."

     The LSTA grant program provides libraries with the opportunity to develop new programs and services, realize goals and objectives, share collections, holdings and statewide databases, train library staff and expand the role of networks, consortia and partnerships.
