White Awards More Than $800,000 in Library Grants

SPRINGFIELD –– Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White announced today that 15 Illinois libraries will receive $844,208 in grants from the federal Library Services and Technology Act.

"Innovation is the key to these grants that allow libraries to implement unique methods of conducting programs and to develop new services and activities to lead library patrons into the new century," said White.

The FY2000 grants, administered by the Illinois State Library, range from $13,250 to $124,000 and can be used for widely varied projects. Libraries, universities and museums will form partnerships to develop model projects and activities.

In Chicago, the University of Illinois Library (UIC) will partner with the Museum of Broadcast Communications (MBC) to develop and produce an interactive learning resource of interest to high school students. Centered on the 1960 presidential debates, the interactive learning resource includes video and audiotapes from the MBC archives.

The Farm Progress Show and the Rolling Prairie Library System in central Illinois will join to demonstrate the impact of technology on downstate rural communities. Other grants will establish homework centers, bring library services to underserved patrons and communities and provide resource sharing among libraries, schools and parent groups statewide.
