State Library Wins Notable Documents Award

CHICAGO ––Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White today announced that the Illinois State Library’s "Find-It! Illinois" Web site was chosen as a 1999 Notable Government Document award winner by the American Library Association’s Government Documents Round Table (GODORT).

"We are proud of all of our State Library’s accomplishments," said White. "The creation of this Web site was a major step in delivering government information to the public."

"Find-It! Illinois" is a Web portal provided by the Illinois State Library. The program is the State Library’s plan to establish and administer a statewide virtual library.

The ALA/GODORT Notable Documents List is created from nominations of federal, state, local and international documents by librarians and agencies around the country. Documents in both electronic and paper formats were considered. Sixteen paper documents received awards and "Find-It! Illinois" was one of two Web sites honored. The goal in conferring these awards is to publicize the marvelous diversity of these documents.

The "Notable Documents List" was originally started to promote awareness and acquisition of government publications by libraries and use by library patrons. The list also was intended to recognize the individuals and agencies involved in producing these excellent sources of information and inspiration.
