Secretary of State Extends Vehicle Registration Deadline to July 14

SPRINGFIELD –– Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White today announced a registration extension until July 14, 2000 for all vehicles with a registration expiration of June 30, 2000 in order to help Illinois motorists who have been hit with skyrocketing gasoline costs in recent weeks.

This extension will cover all vehicles including automobiles, trailers, pickup trucks and vans, and commercial and farm trucks. The total number of registrations that expire on June 30 is 2,045,500.

"We are very aware that the recent jump in gasoline prices has been a serious burden to Illinois motorists and we hope that this extension will help our citizens," White said.

Law enforcement officials throughout the country have been made aware of the extension. On July 15, 2000, all vehicles that have utilized the extension will be required to display a renewed registration, and those not in compliance will be subject to appropriate law enforcement remedies.
