White Announces Literacy Grant Funding in Honor of Senator Penny Severns

SPRINGFIELD –– Illinois Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White announced that 73 agencies throughout the state will share $285,349 in grant funds through the Senator Penny Severns Summer Family Literacy program.

"Senator Severns was a strong advocate for children and education, and these grants will honor her memory by providing literacy services to Illinois families during the summer when traditional school is not in session," said White.

The summer family literacy grants have been awarded to agencies across the state to provide parent-child activities. More than 8,000 parents and children will participate in reading based activities through the program.

"Children and adults often lose forward educational momentum during the summer months," said White, who was a teacher and administrator in the Chicago public school system for 33 years. "These projects will keep them engaged in learning throughout the year."

"I also believe strongly that if we’re going to increase our children’s chances of success in school, we need to ensure that parents have the basic skills necessary to help them succeed," added White. "Family literacy is about improving skills of both children and their parents."

A list of the summer literacy grants is attached. In addition to these grants, White dedicates an additional $8.15 million to help communities provide a variety of literacy services to their residents.
