SPRINGFIELD Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White announced the
release of the new Illinois and Michigan Canal (IL/MI)
license plate.
Funding from the new plate will go towards preserving
and maintaining the canal.
"I’m pleased to release this new plate which honors the
historic significance of the Illinois and Michigan Canal and
raises funds to restore a valuable national landmark," said
White.
The IL/MI Canal trail makes up 97 miles of biking and
hiking trails that go through Cook, Will, Grundy, LaSalle,
and Du Page counties. The trail begins at Bridgeport and
ends at Puru.
The new plates are available for passenger vehicles and
"B" trucks or vans that weigh less than 8,000 pounds. The
plates are not available with vanity or personalized
options.
The Illinois and Michigan Canal License plates cost $40
in addition to the standard $78 registration fee, with $25
going to the fund. Each year an additional $27 will be
required in addition to the standard $78 registration fee
with $25 going to the canal fund and $2 going to the
Secretary of State’s Special License Plate Fund.
The Illinois and Michigan Canal plate is one of the
several specialty plates the Secretary of State offers.
The plates are blue, white and brown with a picture of
a towboat over the "Illinois & Michigan Canal".
