SPRINGFIELD –– Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White has announced that the Illinois State Library will present a free satellite teleconference Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, to discuss how the events of Sept. 11, 2001, have forced libraries to rethink longstanding policies, security issues, confidentiality concerns and other procedures.
The teleconference, titled "September 11 Changed Our World; Has It Changed Our Libraries?" will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 noon Central Standard Time.
"In the aftermath of the horrific events of last Sept. 11, libraries have been the subject of many discussions in the media, our classrooms and elsewhere on issues relating to security, confidentiality and other important matters," said White. "This free satellite teleconference provides an opportunity for members of the library community, patrons and others to ask questions of experts and get definitive answers as we examine vital issues that libraries face in our changed world."
White said the teleconference will touch on such issues as:
- Security and the Internet
- USA Patriot Act
- Illinois Library Confidentiality Act
- Legal responsibilities
- Keeping libraries as sources of complete and accurate information in light of today's environment
- Issues addressed by the national library community
- Results of the survey: Illinois Public Libraries' Response to the Events of September 11
Panelists who will speak and answer questions during the teleconference are:
- John Berry, president, American Library Association
- Karen Coyle, information technology specialist, California Digital Library, University of California
- Leigh Estabrook, director, Library Research Center, University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign
- Phil Lenzini, partner, Kavanagh, Scully, Sudow, White & Frederick, P.C.
- Jean Wilkins, director, Illinois State Library
White said the teleconference can be seen at 30 registration locations in Illinois. It will air live via satellite and also will be available via Webcast. The satellite transmission will broadcast on a KU Band signal. To view the Webcast, Real Player 8 must be installed.
