Motorists with June Registrations Reminded Of Deadline
SPRINGFIELD –– Illinois' newly designed license plates are now being distributed to passenger car owners who have registrations expiring in June, Secretary of State Jesse White said today. New, smaller renewal stickers designed to accommodate the new design plates also are being issued to B-truck and small trailer (3,000 pounds or less) owners who have registrations expiring in June.
In addition, owners of flat weight trucks, truck-tractors and trailers licensed on the fiscal year basis must display year 2003 renewal stickers on their license plates by midnight, June 30.
New design plates are being issued based on the renewal month. All passenger plates will be distributed by July 2002, while B-trucks and all other plate categories will receive new plates in 2003.
It is now too late to mail applications and guarantee delivery of new plates and stickers before the June 30 expiration date. Anyone driving a vehicle on or after July 1 with an expired June 2002 sticker will be subject to a $75 fine for improper registration.
White said passenger car, B-truck and small trailer owners can purchase new plates and stickers online at www.cyberdriveillinois.com , by using the "TouchTone Renewal system, or by visiting a Driver Services facility.
Flat weight truck, tractor-trailer and trailer stickers are available at the Chicago North facility, 5401 N. Elston; the Chicago West facility, 5301 W. Lexington; the Chicago South facility, 9901 S. King; the Chicago East facility, 100 W. Randolph; the Lombard facility, 837 S. Westmore; the Naperville facility, 931 W. 75th; the Woodstock facility, 428 Eastwood; the Libertyville facility, 342 Peterson, and the Joliet facility, 2450 W. Jefferson.

Passenger Cars
Illinois motorists, by law, have the right to retain their current letter and number combinations on their new design plates. If a motorist chooses to retain the number, he or she will be given a 120-day Temporary Renewal Sticker to affix to the old license plate until the new plates are manufactured and delivered to the motorist.
If a motorist does not care to retain his or her current letter and number combination on the new plates, random-number plates are available immediately over the counter at 116 Driver Services facilities. Those facilities also issue renewal stickers for B-trucks and small trailers.
Temporary Renewal Stickers issued when ordering new design plates and B-truck and small trailer renewal stickers for 2003 also are available at about 2,415 financial institutions statewide for a slight additional fee.
Pre-printed renewal applications have been mailed to 1,562,684 passenger car, B-truck and small trailer owners who renew their registrations in June.
Flat Weight Trucks, Tractor-Trailers and Trailers
Truckers registering vehicles weighing 55,000 pounds or more are reminded to comply with the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax by submitting Schedule 1 (Form 2290). The form must be stamped "received" by the Internal Revenue Service before Illinois plates and stickers can be issued.
Farm plates and stickers and flat weight plates and stickers are available at the Howlett Building and Dirksen Parkway facility in Springfield, as well as the Bloomington, Carbondale,
Champaign, Decatur, Granite City, Peoria, Quincy and Tilton facilities.
Mileage Tax plates and stickers may be purchased ONLY in the Commercial and Farm Truck Division, Room 300 in the Howlett Building. Applicants must file $500 surety bonds when they register and semi-annual reports with the Secretary of State's office.
Installment registrations are available in the Commercial and Farm Truck Division and at the Chicago West facility. Applicants must file certificates of deposit or surety bonds for all second installments when they register. The installment applies to trucks and truck-tractors. Semi-trailers and full trailers are NOT eligible.
Pre-printed renewal applications have been mailed to the owners of 344,601 trucks and trailers licensed on the fiscal year basis.
