White Awards FY2002 Digital Imaging Grants
SPRINGFIELD –– Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White has awarded grants to 24 Illinois libraries that will allow the libraries to create electronic versions of material and collections for posting on the Internet so that the contents will be accessible to a wider audience.
White said the Educate and Automate Digital Imaging grants are designed to preserve important aspects of cultural heritage and information about the history of Illinois.
"During our nearly 200 years as a state we have developed a rich and vibrant history, and digital imaging technology is allowing our Illinois libraries to preserve unique and important parts of that history for generations to come," White said. "Additionally, digital imaging technology allows libraries to place historical records, rare materials and collections on the Internet. With more and more citizens accessing the Internet, these treasures have the potential to reach a global audience. I am especially hopeful that our youth will use the Internet to access these historical and culturally significant documents.
"I am delighted that these grants will provide greater access to under-utilized historical and cultural materials, and assist our libraries in developing successful digital imaging projects."
White said Educate and Automate grants are awarded by the Illinois State Library using state funds, and that digital imaging grants are awarded in amounts ranging from $5,000 to $10,000. All types of libraries are eligible for digital imaging grants.
White said the Illinois State Library has compiled an outstanding archive of Illinois digital images that is located at the State Library's information portal, Find-It! Illinois, at http://finditillinois.org.
