SPRINGFIELD –– Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White today reminded Illinois libraries that the Illinois State Library awards Disaster Aid grants of up to $5,000 to assist libraries in replacing equipment and resources in the event of a natural disaster.
"In recent days and weeks, portions of Illinois have witnessed deadly tornadoes and severe flooding," White said. "Illinoisans rally around one another during times of crisis, and I am proud of the citizens who have reached out to assist those who have lost lives and property during our recent inclement weather.
"As State Librarian, I want to remind all of our libraries that the Illinois State Library provides special grants to libraries that suffer damage as a result of a tornado, flood, fire or other disaster. I know how much citizens rely on their libraries, and I'm pleased that my office can provide funding to replace materials or equipment following a disaster."
The special grants are awarded by the Illinois State Library using federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funds. Public, school, academic and special libraries are eligible for funding. Grants can be used to replace damaged or destroyed library materials and equipment. Libraries seeking information about Disaster Aid grants can contact the Illinois State Library at 1-217-524-8836.
