White Urges Motorists to Celebrate the New Year Safely
Secretary of State Police will participate in Roadside
Safety Checks and DUI Patrols

CHICAGO — Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White is reminding drivers to celebrate the New Year by using safety first and designating a driver before the party begins.

"Let's ring in the New Year responsibly," White said. "Please don't drink and drive and remember to buckle your safety belt -- it's your best defense against a drunk driver."

White also reminded motorists of Illinois' new primary safety belt law that allows law enforcement officials to stop and ticket drivers for failing to buckle up. White said the Secretary of State police will participate in roadside safety checks throughout the state and add extra DUI patrols this New Year's Eve.

White is also encouraging people to join the "Tie One on for Safety" program sponsored by his office and Mothers Against Drunk Driving as a sign that they are safe and sober drivers. The program was designed by MADD to encourage the public to become actively involved in the fight against drunk driving by tying a MADD ribbon to a visible place on their vehicle, such as the antenna or side mirror. Red ribbons are available at driver's license facilities across the state.

"Let's make sure we are able to continue celebrating many more New Years by buckling up and designating a sober driver before any drinking begins," White said.
