White Awards Penny Severns Summer Family Literacy Grants

SPRINGFIELD — Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White has awarded 55 grants totaling $250,000 that will allow Illinois families to participate in this summer's Penny Severns Summer Family Literacy Program.

"Now in its sixth year, the Penny Severns Summer Family Literacy Program provides positive, interactive reading and learning activities in which parents and children participate together during times when other reading programs are not operating," said White. "Last year, almost 1,900 parents and 3,200 children participated in the program. Adult learners and children working to improve their literacy skills need access to educational programs year round, and this program meets that need while enhancing the bond between parents and children."

The program is named in honor of the late State Senator Penny Severns (D-Decatur) and provides instructional service to improve the basic reading, math, writing or language skills of both parents and children during the summer, when many other educational programs are closed. Services include instruction and interactive, reciprocal learning experiences that parents and children participate in together. Individual grants are awarded to educational agencies such as libraries, community colleges, community-based organizations, school districts, and volunteer literacy organizations.

"Illinois' network of community-based literacy programs, offered by libraries, community colleges, school districts and others, is making a profound difference in the lives of citizens who want to achieve their utmost potential in life by improving their reading, writing, math or language skills," White said. "I am extremely grateful to the men and women, especially our volunteer tutors, who take time to work with literacy students.

"Penny Severns was a dear friend of mine. She truly believed that public service was a noble profession, and that government could make a positive impact on the lives of citizens. Her selflessness, sense of purpose and compassion is reflected in the literacy program bearing her name."
