White Awards $14.2 Million In Grants To Public Libraries

SPRINGFIELD — Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White today awarded Illinois public libraries $14.2 million in fiscal year 2005 per capita and equalization aid grants.

White said 628 public library per capita grants were allocated at a rate of $1.25 per resident within a library district. An additional 9 public libraries districts with a low library tax base will receive equalization aid grants to ensure a minimum level of funding for library services.

"I am delighted to be able to provide our public libraries with funding they need for important services," White said. "More patrons are using our public libraries than ever before and our public libraries count on this funding to help pay for books, personnel, supplies and equipment, electronic access and special programs.

"This year, with an eye to the future, all public libraries that received these grants submitted three-year plans for library service to their communities. With technology continuing to evolve and patron needs expanding, a long-range plan is essential to ensure public libraries budget properly and deal with technology advancement.

"I truly believe our public libraries are cornerstones of our communities, places where all citizens can go for informational, educational or entertainment purposes. This funding helps ensure that our libraries have the resources to address the needs of their citizens and keep our communities strong."
