White Urges Motorists To Drive Safely During the Most Traveled Holiday Weekend
CHICAGO Secretary of State Jesse White is urging motorists to drive safely during Thanksgiving, the most traveled holiday weekend.
"Thanksgiving is a time to be grateful for family and friends as well as our country and its foundation," White said. "Let's show that appreciation by driving with care and concern for ourselves and others."
White reminded drivers to wear their safety belts and secure children safely in child safety seats. The Child Passenger Protection Act says that children under the age of eight years must be secured in an appropriate child restraint system, including booster seats. Children eight years of age or older, but under the age of 16, must be properly secured in safety belts.
White added that safety belts are the best defense against a drunk driver. Last Thanksgiving, nine people were killed in Illinois, two of whom were involved in alcohol-related crashes. In 2004, 50,147 people were arrested for DUI.
During the holiday weekend Illinois State police, Secretary of State police and local law enforcement will be patrolling the roadways looking for drunk drivers, White said. |
