White Awards Grants To Public Libraries

SPRINGFIELD — Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White has awarded Illinois public libraries almost $14.2 million in fiscal year 2006 per capita and equalization aid grants.

White said 630 public library per capita grants were allocated at a rate of $1.23 per resident. An additional 11 public libraries with a low library tax base will receive equalization aid grants to ensure a minimum level of funding for library services.

"Millions of Illinois citizens will benefit from the grants being awarded to our public libraries this year," White said. "Public libraries count on the per capita grants for important expenses such as paying for books, personnel, equipment, and electronic access. Last year, all public libraries that received these grants submitted three-year plans for library service to their community. With technology continuing to evolve and patron needs growing, long-range planning is essential to help public libraries budget properly and deal with technology advancement.

"Our public libraries are cornerstones of our communities, places where all citizens can go for informational, educational or entertainment purposes. Citizens are proud of their libraries, and this funding helps ensure that our libraries have the resources to address the needs of their citizens and keep our communities strong."
