NEW TO ILLINOIS DRIVING
Secretary of State Facility Checklist
Drivers License
Drivers ages 16-17:
- Proof of successful completion of an approved Driver Education Course or Certificate of Completion (approved Commercial Driving School only)
- Instruction Permit
- 50 Hours Practice Driving Log
- Notarized Affidavit/Consent for Minor to Drive form if not accompanied by Parent/Guardian
- Liability Insurance Card (if taking drive exam)
- Acceptable Identification documents
Drivers ages 18 and older:
- Acceptable Identification documents
- Meet all eligibility requirements, listed in the Illinois Rules of the Road
- Liability Insurance Card (if taking drive exam)
- Payment of appropriate fee via cash, check or Discover credit card
Illinois Title and Registration
- Vehicles titled and registered in another jurisdiction for three months or more prior to moving to Illinois are exempt from Illinois tax, but Illinois Department of Revenue tax forms RUT-50 (if purchased from an individual) or RUT-25 (if purchased from an out-of-state dealer) must be completed showing exempt status. If you leased or rented a vehicle for three months or more and lived out of state, you will need the bill of sale and a copy of the lease agreement. (All Illinois taxes must be paid when the vehicle is leased.) In addition, for rented vehicles, a copy of the certificates of insurance is required.
