ABOUT THE AUTHOR
The Illinois State Library Heritage Project is the work of Tom Emery, a critically acclaimed freelance writer and historical researcher.
In 2007, the Illinois State Library awarded Emery a Library Services and Technology Act grant to pursue this project. The project was sponsored by the Blackburn College library and offered Emery a prime opportunity to break new ground.
“That is when historical research not only becomes plausible, but fun,” said Emery. “When I look for new projects, I want to do something that’s never been done before. To be the first to tackle a certain subject, and compile research that’s never been attempted is an exhilarating feeling, and that’s what I love the most. A large-scale project like this one on the Illinois State Library gave me that opportunity.”
Emery was valedictorian of the Blackburn College Class of 1993, with majors in business administration, accounting and economics. He earned an M.B.A. from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville in 1995.
Prior to this project, Emery had compiled 13 book and booklet titles on an array of historical topics. Emery, 41, is single and lives in Carlinville, Illinois.
