Military - Gold Star License Plate

Any Illinois resident who is a surviving widow/widower, parent or sibling(s) of a person who served in the U.S. Armed Forces and lost his/her life while serving during peacetime or war. The surviving widow/widower, parent, daughter, son or sibling(s) may be issued one set of plates. A Gold Star Affirmation verifying receipt of the Gold Star, including the service member’s name and relationship to the applicant is required.

Public Act 99-0805 allows transfer of plates to spouses of military service members. "Upon the death of a military service member who has been issued plates the surviving spouse of that service member may retain the plate so long as that spouse is a resident of Illinois and transfers the registration to his or her name within 180 days of the death of the service member".
